FAQ

What is Bleed?

The term bleed is used for all objects overlapping the border of your document. Let's say your working on a brochure with images against the sides of your pages. You'll supply the printer with a document somewhat larger then the final document will be. SK Print Design require at least 3mm full bleed on all your documents.

Why do I need Bleed?

After the brochure is printed it will be cropped to it's correct size. The bleed in your document gives the cropping some room for error. The paper itself can expand or contract, the cropping machine could setup wrong or the person working on the brochure could make a mistake. There are a lot of factors that could go wrong with the cropping, if you wouldn't be using bleed the images wouldn't be neatly aligned with the side of your printed document.

How do apply Bleed to my document?

Some software will allow you to apply bleed automatically, however most design software requires you to apply it manually. To do this simply add 3mm to all the sides of your document, then stretch or draw in the excess. In Adobe Photoshop CS3 / CS4 you can do this by adding 6mm to the width and height of the canvas size. Alternatively you can use one of our *Templates and add it as another layer on your Adobe Photoshop document. Most graphic designers will change the opacity of this layer to 50% so they can see where the document will be cropped.

How do I create an impressive design that will get noticed?

5 TIPS to an SK Genius Design

1 Check your formatting!
Before you send off your document, check that it has the correct 3mm Bleed, is in *CMYK colours and in at least 300dpi Resolution.

2 Read
Too often these days our design team comes accross beautifully created adverts with pretty photos and drawings on par with Picasso that make absolutely no sense! THINK. What is the message that you are trying to get accross? Does your design actually tell people about you, and what you do.

3 Action Point
What is the action point of your design or does it even have one? For example, do you want people to see it and visit your store, website, send you an email with their personal details, enter a competition, post you a letter, make a donation, call you up, order a takeaway. Having an action point is the best way to measure the success of any marketing campaign.

4 High Quality
Nothing looks more unprofessional than blurry pictures or scatty photos. Choose your photos well, and demand high quality!

5 Paper
Are you marketing to the masses or a handful of important clients. If your doing the latter you may want to think about choosing the best quality paper. Our *300gsm gloss is ideal for such occasions. If your doing the former then you may want to cut your costs and go for a more affordable *135gsm gloss.
